VergeSense sensor installation

Difficulty: novice

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Install VergeSense sensor

After successful VergeSense gateway installation, you can now start sensor installation.

Place and set up up to 50 VergeSense VS-L410 sensor devices clustered around the gateway. The sensors will automatically set up a mesh network to connect to the gateway and each other.

From VergeSense Experience, it’s possible to install 45 magnet sensors per 8h (incl setup and cleanup), assuming all locations are available, see Checklist hardware on-site visit or installation

  • VergeSense sensor, with 2 magnets on the bottom
  • White cover plate
  • Bottom plate which can be used to install without the magnets
  • 2 screws

Preparation

As soon as the gateway connectivity has been confirmed, please press the button to power on the sensors and place them face up (as in the above picture) as close to the gateway as possible, to make sure an initial connection can be established. Placing the sensor face up allows confirmation that the sensors work.

On the side of the device, an LED inside of the sensor will show all the colors from the rainbow and then turn off.

Configuration on VergeSense Platform

As soon as the sensors are linked to the gateway, link them to the relevant areas in the VergeSense platform as described in the VergeSense configuration guide.

Info

It takes some time for the sensors to connect and send the first data to the VergeSense platform, so we found that time was optimized when we

  1. first configure the devices on the platform,
  2. then reboot* the sensors
  3. immediately followed by the installation.

* sensor reboot methods are described in VergeSense troubleshooting (max 3 at the same time)

Activation

  • Power the sensor by holding the power button for 5 seconds. The LED will then power on.
  • When first booting up (and in the vicinity of an active gateway), the sensor will cycle - Red, Green, Blue (0.5s each color) 3 times
  • The light will flash green once every 15s for 5min confirming connectivity.

Info

There is no OFF position.

See VergeSense troubleshooting for more information about different LED colors and the status of the sensor

Installation

Note

In the moment of installation, make sure to reboot* the sensor. This will trigger the sensor and make Commissioning quicker.

* sensor reboot methods are described in VergeSense troubleshooting (max 3 at the same time)

Installation location

Note

The maximum distance between the gateway and the nearest installed sensor should be no more than 10 meters.

The maximum distance between 2 sensors should be no more than 10 meters.

10% of the sensors should be within 10m of the gateway.

Refer to the sensor plan, in which VergeSense made a suggestion of where to place the sensors (see VergeSense installation location).

Info

Start with installing sensors close to the gateway, then further away. This way, the mesh will build up.

The Proposed Sensor Design is based on provided floor and ceiling plans. If floorplan, furniture plan, reflected ceiling plan or physical configuration of the floor has changed, this may result in a change in number of sensors/gateways, sensor/gateway placement, and corresponding commissioning and installation fees.

Installation direction

The sensor viewing direction indicated on the VergeSense Platform (SW internal) should be respected.

It’s important to match the orientation as indicated in below visual for proper coverage and data capture.

Info

The VergeSense sensor detection area / field of view is rectangular.

Installation method

Ideally, use the magnetic placement. This allows for easy repositioning if needed.

If magnetic placement is not possible: it’s possible to tape or screw a sensor in the ceiling.

Exchange the Bottom plate (with magnets) for the reserve bottom plate that come with the devices, for easy installation without the magnets

Info

Make sure to check with your Spacewell Implementation Consultant and VergeSense consultant when you’re not using magnets: once a hole is drilled, it’s very difficult to reposition afterwards.

Inform Spacewell & VergeSense if the installation location is different compared to Sensor Plan

If hanging obstructions e.g. fire suppression systems, lighting, artwork, plants, design elements are blocking the field of view of the sensors, this may result in a change in number of sensors, sensor placement, and corresponding commissioning and installation fees.

note

(in case of installation when it’s dark outside) Leave the light on in the rooms where VergeSense sensors are installed, so that commissioning is not hindered by the darkness.

Commissioning

As soon as the installation is done, inform your Spacewell Implementation Consultant when all sensors are installed. They will inform VergeSense through the Notes function on the VergeSense Platform (SW internal).

Info

The sooner the mapping is done, the sooner VergeSense can confirm or give feedback in the commissioning phase, and the sooner you can take a follow-up action.

Concerning headcount on workplaces, only in this stage, VergeSense creates "workstation" areas.

Next steps

Configuration on Workplace Platform

Only after commissioning (per location) is finalized, data will be send to the Workplace Platform. See VergeSense configuration for more information about this next step.

Quality Assurance

After sensor configuration, follow the Quality Assurance Occupancy and Utilization Sensor instructions to make sure all use cases are covered.

Archive

Until 2025, the wireless VergeSense sensor was a different device type (L302), which operates on 6 AA batteries.
