PointGrab installation

Difficulty: expert

Learning Objectives

After reading this article, you’ll be able to:

  • Install PointGrab devices, using PoE or WiFi

Make sure to check PointGrab hardware and network requirements prior to sensor installation.

Create a sensor plan before going on site, so that all parties are aligned on PointGrab installation location.

Physically installing PointGrab™ sensor devices

After defining the sensor layout with your Spacewell Consultant, you'll need to install the physical CogniPoint™ sensor devices on the ceiling. The sensor layout that you defined determines the location, height and view direction of the sensors, and you must make sure that you install the sensor devices according to the defined specifications.

Info

How to keep track of installation location per device? Best practice is to tape the sticker on the Sensor Plan or take note of the sensor ID (number starting with 4000…) in an excel at the place of installation.

To physically install a CogniPoint™ sensor, use following steps.

Option 1: Powered + connected to the network using Power over Ethernet

Step 1. Secure the flat ceiling adapter to the ceiling, using two wall plugs and two screws.

Caution: Make sure the view direction marker on the adapter aligns with the required view direction.

Step 2. Route the PoE cable in one of the following ways:
  • Into the ceiling
  • In parallel to the ceiling, through the adapter side openings
Step 3. Connect the sensor to the Power Source

Connect the RJ-45 plug and route the Ethernet cable (RJ-45 (Cat 5e cable or better)) through the cable lead clips.

Note

Only Shielded LAN cable should be used

To use this tool, you’ll have to provide an Authentication key for every device you want to configure.

To obtain the Authentication keys, create a ticket towards the Spacewell Hardware team, who will request the keys from Pointgrab.

Configuration of PointGrab on your WiFi network

Step 1. Connect your laptop and the Pointgrab CogniPoint™ sensor device to same network

Connect your laptop and the PointGrab CogniPoint™ sensor device to same network (on a router): both devices need an IP address

Step 2. Check the Pointgrab IP address

Use https://www.advanced-ip-scanner.com/ to detect all network interfaces on the connected router -> PointGrab devices will turn up in the list as “Raspberry Pi Foundation”

image2021-3-20 10:59:39.png
Step 3. Add the IP address to the package

Insert IP address into the list on the package (“ip_list.txt”); just add them one below the other if you want to configure multiple PointGrabs for use over WiFi network

Step 4. Run Pointgrab configuration tool

Run "PG device configuration tool" from File (In the root of the package)

Step 5. Confirm you want to set up WiFi

Configuration tool for devices running versions lower than 5.1:

  • Check box in front of WiFi > select WiFi-button
image2021-10-8 10:47:48.png

Configuration tool for devices running v5.1 or higher

  1. Enter the device ID(s) that you want to manage today
    1. Upload Device list from File or

    2. Enter devices by entering the serial number and device IP. Press “add” to add the device to the devices list on the left
  2. Upload the Authentication keys (provided by Pointgrab via the Spacewell Hardware team)
  3. Select “Next”
Step 6. Fill in WiFi network details
  1. Insert SSID name
  2. If network password available: check box and insert password
  3. If network has no password, don't check box
  4. If you have hidden SSID network you can select this also
  5. Run the changes
  6. In the Configuration tool for devices running v5.1 or higher: confirm your changes

You'll get a confirmation stating if running the tool was successful.

Step 7. Pointgrab reboot

After a couple of seconds, the PointGrab device will reboot.

Step 8. Confirm Connection to Pointgrab Cloud
  1. On premise: the device will connect to the configured WiFi network, LED will turn off to indicate connection to the PointGrab Cloud
  2. When remote: LED will be blinking blue because the device can’t connect to the WiFi

What do do when your network is not password protected, but devices are whitelisted by their MAC address?

How to extract the MAC address and configure the PointGrabs:

Step 1. Connect ethernet cable to your laptop to run DHCP

Connect a switch to your laptop with ethernet cable and share the internet connection from WiFi to the ethernet connection so that you get DHCP running there.

Step 2. Check Pointgrab MAC addresses

Run the Advanced IP scanner to get the MAC addresses of the PointGrabs when doing the configuration.

image2021-10-1 13:57:1.png
Step 3. Configure SSID and no password

Configure the PointGrabs by setting the values in the configuration file to the correct SSID and no password:
network={
        ssid="ssid"
        key_mgmt=NONE
}

In this case, “ssid” is a placeholder for the relevant WiFi network name in your case

Step 4. Run WiFi configurator

Run the WiFi configurator with the IP addresses in the list and got reasonable results like:
C:\Users\xxx\OneDrive - Spacewell\Desktop\pg>Wifi_configurator.exe -m FromFile
(SensorPG1_SensorTypes.EMBEDDED) [D]: Configure
(SensorPG1_SensorTypes.EMBEDDED) [D]: Open Session
